Other initiatives include Leadership Development Programmes, customised senior management programmes, partnerships with leading universities in the world such as Harvard, and a successful Management Training programme for fresh graduates. Workplace Safety and Health The health and safety of our staff are very important to us. We encourage all employees and contractors to take advantage of the extensive training and management processes and other Occupational Safety and Health resources that we have put in place to maintain a safe and healthy working environment. Safeguarding employee welfare Our employees enjoy a comprehensive and competitive package of benefits. Apart from the standard benefits of annual leave, medical and insurance coverage, employees are also offered special staff packages on Maxis products and services. Work-Life Balance We launched a wellness programme, My Wellness, My Choice in 2011 to encourage employees to lead a healthy lifestyle both at work and at home. It incorporates a three-year plan to raise their understanding about wellness and disease-prevention. More than 60% of Maxis employees nationwide have completed their biometric screening. An online health risk assessment application, HealthDrive, evaluated their health risks and quality of life. We also offer flexible work hours, a Flexi Benefits programme and other initiatives that involve and benefit our employees and their families. ADVOCATING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PRACTICES Part of what we do involves the physical construction of data networks. We want to do this in a way that limits our impact on the environment. Beyond this, we have taken a proactive approach to constructively rehabilitate and rebuild the landscape. Over the past two years, we have placed extra emphasis on addressing our direct operational impacts on the environment. Our strategic plan identifies three major focus areas: resource efficiency; carbon management and energy and waste management. Resource Efficiency and Carbon Management Over the past two years, we achieved a 13.7% improvement in the energy efficiency of our operations – avoiding over four tonnes of CO 2 emission for each base transmitter station and saving almost RM10 million in avoided cost. We have replaced key network elements with best-in-class technologies which are energy-efficient. We have also replaced diesel power with solar power at remote base stations, and advocated sharing of networks so that resources are not duplicated. Approximately 54% of our base station sites are shared with other operators. In 2011, Maxis entered into a landmark agreement to share our 3G radio access networks (RAN), the first active 3G RAN sharing arrangement to be deployed in Malaysia.
MAXIS BERHAD ANNUAL REPORT 2011 93 Although we do not place base transmission stations in high biodiversity areas, we recognise that some of our base stations will replace natural vegetation which acts as a carbon sink and supports biodiversity. We are currently exploring guidelines for site acquisition assessments to ensure that we do not impose on high biodiversity areas. We planted over 7,000 Mahang seedlings at a one-for-one ratio for every base transmission station to contribute towards minimising our carbon footprint. The scheme was implemented in partnership with the Selangor Forestry Department, Sathya Sai Council of Malaysia and the Global Environment Centre. Further Information We have produced our inaugural Sustainability Report 2010/2011. This disclosure showcases our sustainable business practices in the marketplace, workplace, community and environment. The Report covers an 18-month reporting period from January 2010 to June 2011 and follows the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework, an internationally recognised standard for sustainability reporting. Maxis’ Sustainability Report 2010/2011 is available on our website. Energy and Waste Management We are working hard to bring down our energy consumption and reduce waste throughout our operations. We also encourage our suppliers and customers to minimise wastage and use recyclable green materials. Key initiatives include: • Installing energy saving light bulbs, reducing the number of visits to sites, introducing heat management solutions and better air conditioning, and installing dynamic radio control power during off peak periods. • Encouraging all offices to turn off air conditioners after 6 pm, and introducing recycling for papers and toners across the business. • We have introduced e-billing and continue to promote this to increase uptake. TOP Maxis staff, working with partners, planted over 7,000 Mahang seedlings in our efforts towards the reduction of CO 2 emissions.
