Of these the Banca de Credit is controlled<br />

by the Oesterreichische Creditanstaltof Vienna,<br />

Mendelssohn & Co. of Berlin, Kleinworth<br />

Sons & Co. of London, Banque des Pays de I'Europe<br />

Centrale of Paris and other foreign institutions.<br />

Among the foreign interests -dominating the Banca Commerciale<br />

we find the names of Banque de l' Union<br />

Parisienne of Paris, Banque BeIge pour I' Etranger of<br />

Brussels, etc.<br />

Let us turn our eyes to another country of the Balkan<br />

complex, namely, Bulgaria (pop. 7! millions). In 1928<br />

the banking system 11 of Bulgaria comprised the following<br />

items:<br />

I. Government institutions:<br />

1. The National Bank<br />

2. The Agricultural Bank<br />

3. The Central Co-operative Bank<br />

II. People's Banks (co-operative): 164<br />

III. Small Joint-Stock Banks: 119<br />

IV. Large Joint-Stock Banks: 8<br />

There were thus altogether some 291 institutions<br />

-excluding the three official ones. The relative positions<br />

of the last three categories can be seen in the following<br />
