are .signs leading one to hope that dozens of commer·:<br />

cial banks are going to be started in the course of the next<br />

few years.<br />

Let us here analyze the balance sheets of some Ger··<br />

man banks in order to get an idea of the higher flights of<br />

which modem banking is capable. They will in any<br />

case furnish us with good object-lessons in bank.<br />

management.<br />

Like other bankS and business concerns of Germany<br />

in general the Commerz-und-Privat Bank has since the<br />

stabilization of the currency (1924) strenuously striven<br />

to reorganize the administration. The reorganization has.<br />

invariably meant retrenchment and this has resulted in<br />

(1) a reduction in the number of employees and (2) the.<br />

installation of machine work replacing thereby human.<br />

labour.<br />

Commerz-und-Privaf Bank<br />

The Commerz-und-Privat Bank had deputed technical<br />

experts to the U.S.A. in order to investigate the<br />

employment of labour-saving appliances in the offices<br />

and workshops of that country. The results of<br />

their research have since been adopted by the authorities.<br />

In 1925 this bank had to close 16 small branches,.<br />

and found it necessary to reorganize 59 branches on<br />

a sound basis. The year began with 10,260 employees.<br />

but ended with 7,100. 29<br />
