THE BANK CAPITALISM OF YOUNG BENGAL
And in deposits
Societe-Generale
= 10·3 Central Bank of India
- 1'5 Mitsui
- 1·1 Banca Commerciale Italiana
- 0·25 Midland Bank
- 0·18 Deutsche Bank
The Societe Generale is inferior to the two institutions
of Japan and Italy in capital but slightly superior in
deposits. On the whole it may be taken to be at a par with
the Mitsui and the Banca Commerciale. This equation
establishes automatically its relations in regara to the
British and the German institutions considered here. It
is almost a quarter of the Midland and about a sixth or
seventh of the Deutsche Bank in capital. If we exclude
the Credit Lyonnais which, cilthough higher than the
Societe Generale in capital and reserve, is yet equal to it
in deposits, the second biggest from France, the Comptoir
National d 'Escompte, is naturally much inferior to all
these big banks of Germany and England. Altogether,
France is likely to be tre~ted as second-grade in banking
by the British and especially by the German standarq of
to-day."
. yp -till now we have been trying to understand the
C.B.I in the light of the great powers, industrial and political.
Let us now measure it by the Balkan standard."
We get the following equations:
. .
38 For 1929 the following curr~ncy equivalents have been taken for
calculations in round numbers: Re. 1 = 7 !ires = 9 francs (French)
=1.50 Reichsmarks: £I;"'R •• 13·8.0; Yen 1= Re. 1-4.0;
'9 Re. 1=3 zloties = 2() dinars = 27 drachmae = 50 lewa. = 60 leis.
