in International Railway Statistics<br />

The railways constitute the greatest single industry<br />

~f India. From something above 633,000 in 1913~14 the<br />

-employment roll of this transportation system has expanded<br />

to 741,860 in 1925-26, 772,563 in 1926-27 and a little<br />

above 800,000 in 1927-28. For 1926 the number was<br />

more than that of all the employees in the cotton<br />

,(384, 082), jute (333, 659) and woollen (8,748) mills put<br />

together. In 1927-28 the amount of capital at charge on<br />

.all the railway lines rose to Rs. 8,228,625,000 from<br />

Rs. 7,886,666,000 in 1926-27. A comparative estimate<br />

·of the paid-up capital in a number of joint-stock<br />

enterprises in India will serve to place the railways in the<br />

proper financial perspective. In regard to 1926-27 the<br />

. following figures may be offered:<br />
