generation and a half or rather two generations ahead of
us. It is important to remember that we have begun
'well, and that the rate of progress being what it is; the
most objective and hard-headed bu~iness men of Bengal
:can legitimately believe that it will not be long before we
.attain tbe level of banking of which any nation may be
proud.
The moral is clear. The experienc~ of the U.S.A~
and England as well . as Of . France and' Gennany, but
,especially of Italy and Japan, should be eye-openers to all
risirignations. It does not take centuries and millenniums
to become modernized in regard to bank~technique,
.industrialization or business organization and also to
make one' s power felt in the world of commerce and
~culture.
Incidentally be it remarked that Young Bengal, am­
.bitious ~s she has for some time been to develop capital
.and industrial . power, should make it a point
to cultivate acquaintance of the •• younger peoples"
.of the modern world especially of Italy and
Japan and derive inspiration as to the great
Possibilities that. await her in' the near future.
This is but another reason why in India to~day it is absolufely
necessary for the busiI).eSs men as well as intellectuals'
to devote iricreasing attention to the study of .
Japanese and Italian as well as of French and German
economic developments and to the promotion of com-

mercial and cultural contact with these powers.
