Geographical Indication (GI) options for Ethiopian Coffee and Ghanaian Cocoa

exclude others from the use of an indication that reproduces, imitates or falsifies
the indication in any form. Producers could, as a condition of trading over
their products, prohibit downstream operators in the market, such as distributors,
manufacturers and retailers, from blending the product with cheap coffee
or cocoa supplies that do not originate from the area signified by the indication.
In the long term, this would allow coffee and cocoa farmers to differentiate their
distinctive products from commodity chains and to negotiate the price of their
product independently.
