Institutional roles<br />

Research institutions in Botswana are expected to play a key role in ensuring<br />

that IP policies encourage researchers to harness benefits from publicly funded<br />

research. These roles include, but are not limited to: providing an enabling environment<br />

<strong>for</strong> research; helping researchers patent the most promising concepts<br />

<strong>and</strong> license the work to firms that commercialise them into new products <strong>and</strong> services;<br />

<strong>and</strong> ensuring that important ideas generated from publicly funded research<br />

enter the marketplace. Government policy expects research institutions to provide<br />

funding to scale <strong>and</strong> commercialise ideas, business expertise to commercialise,<br />

human capital to build start-up companies, <strong>and</strong> mentoring <strong>and</strong> educational<br />

support <strong>for</strong> new entrepreneurs.<br />

Table 15.9 shows respondents’ views regarding the role institutions should<br />

play in generating benefits from publicly funded research. An overwhelming<br />

majority of the respondents (92%) stated that their institutions should notify<br />
