The Main Tasks of the Chairperson<br />

The main tasks of the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Case Conference Chairperson are to ensure<br />

that:<br />

Conference maintain a focus on the child as the primary client whose interests<br />

must transcend those of the parent where there is any conflict.<br />

The Order of business is established.<br />

The purpose of the particular <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Case Conference is made clear.<br />

The people present are those required for the fulfilment of that purpose.<br />

All those present contribute and full consideration is given to their contribution.<br />

A plan, based on assessment and clearly understood by all concerned, is<br />

developed and agreed for recommendation to the agencies concerned. This<br />

plan is the ‘<strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Plan’<br />

The workers and agencies involved in the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> plan and in<br />

particular the lead officer are identified. This is recorded in the minute<br />

While the Case Conference may make recommendations that another agency<br />

should exercise its powers or duties in respect of a child, however, it remains<br />

the responsibility of that agency to decide whether or not to act upon the<br />

recommendation.<br />

Arrangements for review of the plan and the date of the first Review <strong>Child</strong><br />

<strong>Protection</strong> Case Conference are agreed.<br />

Agreement is reached in the case conference about how and when parents or<br />

carers who are not present will be informed verbally of the plan for inter-agency<br />

co-operation and of the purpose of the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register.<br />

A written minute of the Case Conference which records those participating,<br />

absentees, the discussion and the recommendation, is made.<br />

The <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Case Conference achieves its other purposes.<br />

Details are entered on the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register as appropriate.<br />

The Case Conference Chair person recognises his/her responsibility’s to<br />

ensure decisions are based upon all the circumstances and to decide whether<br />

a child’s name should be placed on/removed from the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong><br />

Register, and if, so under which category.<br />
