properly investigating them can also be very dangerous. Early<br />

recognition of abuse or neglect can prevent serious harm to children<br />

by ensuring that appropriate action is taken when it is likely to be<br />

most effective.<br />

2.12.6 (a) Who should be consulted/informed within the agency?<br />

2.12.7 For all cases where there is a suspicion of possible abuse, dentists<br />

should seek the advice of either the relevant Consultant in Paediatric<br />

Dentistry or Consultant in Dental Public Health for their area of<br />

operation (or their authorised deputies). <strong>East</strong> <strong>Ayrshire</strong> <strong>Council</strong> is<br />

served by <strong>Ayrshire</strong> and Arran Health Board.<br />

2.12.8 For those dentists working in the community dental service the<br />

Dental Service Manager or Senior Dental Officer should be contacted<br />

first.<br />

2.12.9 In those cases where suspicions are aroused the following steps<br />

should be taken according to the location of the examination:<br />

In the case of a child being examined or treated in a preschool<br />

or play group, nursery school or school the Head<br />

Teacher or Play Group Leader should be informed.<br />

In the case of a child being examined or treated in any other<br />

location such as a clinic or surgery the child’s General<br />

Practitioner or a Community Paediatrician (See section 2.7 +<br />

2.7.1) should be told in order to arrange for a medical<br />

examination. The reason for your suspicions should be given.<br />

2.12.10 (b) When and how should others be told?<br />

2.12.11 Direct contact should be made in person or by telephone with the<br />

General Practitioner or Community Paediatrician in the case of<br />

children treated within clinics or in a surgery. The Head Teacher<br />

should also be contacted directly or by telephone in cases where<br />

children have been treated or examined in schools. These people<br />

should be contacted immediately.<br />

2.12.12 (c) What needs to be recorded?<br />

2.12.13 All records of the visit, medical and dental history, and discussions<br />

should be recorded in full and in some circumstances it may be<br />

necessary to provide diagrams or even in some cases photographs.<br />

This record should be completed immediately.<br />

2.12.14 (d) Who makes the decision about future action?<br />
