Once a referral has been made, the Head/Guidance Teacher<br />

will be kept informed of the progress of the investigation, and<br />

particularly if the investigation is terminated.<br />

If a referral is made to the Social Work Department from any<br />

other source and the child in question is of school age, the<br />

Head/Guidance Teacher will be informed and consulted as<br />

soon as possible.<br />

Careful notes should be made of any statements/incidents, as<br />

a full report will be required by any Case Conference, and by<br />

the <strong>Child</strong>ren’s Reporter and possibly the Procurator Fiscal.<br />

The Head/Guidance/Class Teacher, as appropriate, will be<br />

expected to attend any Case Conference and to share<br />

information which will enable the child or young person to be<br />

protected.<br />

2.14 Community Services Department – Recreation Services<br />

2.14.1 Community and Leisure staff encounter young people of all ages in a<br />

wide range of settings and activities in the course of which trusting<br />

relationships may develop within which a young person may disclose<br />

abuse. Similarly, staff will get to know young people in their care<br />

very well and will be sensitive to changes in their mood or behaviour.<br />

2.14.2 Clearly, Community and Leisure staff will be anxious to respect a<br />

young person’s expressed wish for confidentiality, but if abuse is<br />

disclosed or suspected, the young person should be given the<br />

message that what is happening is not right and that adults must take<br />

control to stop it.<br />

2.14.3 The following steps should be taken:<br />

If a young person discloses abuse directly, listen carefully and<br />

sympathetically, but as soon as practicable, tell them that you<br />

must inform other people.<br />

Contact the Duty Social Worker in the child’s local office, or<br />

the stand-by worker through Stand-By: 0141 305 6970 or<br />

Freephone 0800 811 505, if it is out of normal office hours.<br />

(9.00 a.m. – 5-00 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 9.00 a.m. –<br />

4.00 p.m. on Friday).<br />

Make careful notes of what the child has told you.<br />

In situations where there is no direct allegation but Community<br />

and Leisure Staff are suspicious that abuse might be taking<br />

place, they should consult with the Team Leader (<strong>Child</strong>ren<br />

and Families) in the child’s local area.<br />
