5.7.1 There are two <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Registers which must be checked:<br />
(1) <strong>East</strong> <strong>Ayrshire</strong>’s <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register – Telephone<br />
(01563) 576901<br />
(2) Central <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register – Telephone 0141 305<br />
6930 (or 0800 811 505 out with office hours). The<br />
Central <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register holds all relevant data on<br />
child protection cases throughout the West of Scotland.<br />
5.7.2 On receiving an enquiry about the Register, the name and telephone<br />
number should be noted to which a call back can be made to the<br />
enquirer.<br />
5.7.3 The register will be checked and the enquirer informed accordingly.<br />
5.7.4 Where a child’s name is not on the Register, it should be ascertained<br />
if the enquirer is referring the child and if so he/she should be<br />
requested to make a referral in writing.<br />
5.7.5 A record should be kept of all enquiries to the Register and it is the<br />
responsibility of the Service Unit Manager (<strong>Child</strong>ren and Families) to<br />
pass on information to the relevant Social Work Office. The Service<br />
Unit Manager (<strong>Child</strong>ren and Families) must also undertake a review<br />
of this record at least once a month.<br />
5.8 Custodian of the Register<br />
5.8.1 Any comments regarding the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register should be<br />
made to the Custodian of the Register at <strong>Child</strong>ren and Families, Civic<br />
Centre, John Dickie Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 1BY Tel No: 01563<br />

5.9 Access to <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register<br />
5.9.1 Access to the <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Protection</strong> Register is restricted to professionals<br />
who have a ‘need to know’ in order to protect the child. A careful<br />
call-back system should be operated. Those professionals are<br />
identified as follows:<br />
• General Practitioners<br />
• Community Medical Staff<br />
• Hospital Medical Staff<br />
• Community Nursing Staff on the grade of Health Visitor or<br />
Nursing Officer and above<br />
• Hospital Nursing Staff on the rank of Sister and above<br />
• Social Workers internal to the <strong>Council</strong><br />
• Police Officer<br />
• Head Teacher<br />
• Authority Reporter<br />
