Such<br />

persons are wanting in the knowledge of the truth which leads <strong>to</strong><br />

godliness, consequently in that knowledge which is wholesome ;<br />

its place come ^i]Ti]oeig, questions of controversy, and Xoyofiaxiai,<br />

verbal altercations, which do not lead <strong>to</strong> godliness, and thereby <strong>to</strong><br />

spiritual soundness ; hence voaelv. This metaphor, and particularly<br />

its use here, is explained by the peculiar form of this hepoS. ; comp.<br />

the Gen. Introd. Z7)T-)]aeig, controversial questions, comp. on Tit. iii.<br />

9, and above, i. 4. Aoyoiiaxlai, = verbal altercations, de verbis magis<br />

quam de rebus (Calvin) ; a controversy which can spring only from<br />

selfishness, and not from love <strong>to</strong> the truth, as the results also show.<br />

On nepi as denoting the object about which, so <strong>to</strong> speak, anything<br />

moves = circa, comp. Winer's Grr., § 49, I, p. 361. Leo and De<br />

Wette are for understanding vooelv = " <strong>to</strong> suffer in the mania for."<br />

<strong>The</strong> opposition <strong>to</strong> vy. didaoKaXia, vyiatveiv iv moretj Tit. i. 13, does<br />

not point <strong>to</strong> such a meaning ; the signification itself, however, is<br />

demonstrably correct. This is the state of mind belonging <strong>to</strong> those<br />

who teach otherwise. <strong>The</strong> consequences of their questions and<br />

word-strifes are then stated in the words that follow : tf o)v ylveraij<br />

etc., = from which proceeds envy, dissension, slanders, evil suspicion,<br />

lasting contests of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the<br />

truth, who look upon godliness as gain. <strong>The</strong> identity of the persons<br />

here characterized with those elsewhere referred <strong>to</strong> in the epistles<br />

is evident from the features in this description, comp. the Gen.<br />

Introd., and on Tit. i. 14. By the (iXaacprmiai are <strong>to</strong> be unders<strong>to</strong>od<br />

not blasphemies against God, but, as the other characteristics show,<br />

mutual slanders ; in like manner the vnovotai nov. are <strong>to</strong> be taken<br />

in the sense = malevolee de iis qui alias partes sequuntur ....<br />

suspiciones (Leo.) <strong>The</strong> word occurs only here ;<br />

vnovotcj frequently<br />

in the Acts of the Apostles.<br />

Ver. 5. HapadiarpilSai is the common reading ; the best accred><br />

ited (comp. Lachmann, Tischendorf ) is dianapaTpij3ai On the signification,<br />

comp. Winer's Gr. § 16, 4, B., p. 92 :<br />

latter also corresponds better <strong>to</strong> the context—inasmuch as vanag<br />

disputationes have already been denoted by Aoyojtt. and it is strife<br />

that is spoken of in the context—has been shown by. Leo in his excellent<br />

investigation of this word, p. 60. Olshausen <strong>to</strong>o is of the<br />

opinion here preferred. <strong>The</strong> inmost source of these pursuits in the<br />

disposition of those men is then indicated in the words 7nen of corrupt<br />

minds, etc., substantially the same as in ver. 4, he is proud,<br />

etc. <strong>The</strong> description is the same as elsewhere, comp. on dit^O., Tit.<br />

i. 15 ; on dneaTepTjusvcov, etc., above on i. 19 ; Tit, i. 14. This last<br />

predicate shows plainly that that teaching of other things, against<br />

which <strong>Timothy</strong> is warned, did not emanate from those who from
