the use of other letters of Paul, and the supposed ecclesiastical<br />

formula of ii. 8, comp. the exposition. I merely recall further the<br />

statement of the Greneral Introduction of the impossibility of explaining<br />

the origin of this letter from the purposes of a fabrica<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

<strong>The</strong> purposes assumed as the ground of the other epistles, viz.,<br />

the refutation of gnosticism and the support of the hierarchy, cannot<br />

be attributed <strong>to</strong> this which deals with <strong>Timothy</strong> personally ; it<br />

must therefore be assumed that the author has lost sight of his object,<br />

and a paternal letter of admonition sprung up under his hand<br />

—a letter which in such regular method as is shewn § 1, 2, holds up<br />

before <strong>Timothy</strong> his present duties as an evangelist, and exhorts him<br />

<strong>to</strong> a service of love <strong>to</strong>ward the apostle.
