The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) presented the
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of St. Petersburg, Florida for its annual budget for
the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2008. To receive this award, a governmental unit must publish a
budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial
plan, and as a communications tool.
The Budget and Management Department prepares the mayor's recommended budget with the assistance
of city department directors and their budget liaisons. Budget workshop sessions with the mayor, City
Council, organization staff and members of the community help the department assess key strategic
initiatives that drive the budget decision-making process. As well, the department prepares short and
long-range revenue and expenditure forecasts, analyzes economic trends, and monitors current fiscal
operations.
