Bitumen<br />

Bitumen is produced in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> at the Marsden Point Refinery <strong>and</strong> its compositi<strong>on</strong> will reflect the<br />

source <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the crude oil from which it was derived (the source changes over time). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

elements such as Hg, Ni, V <strong>and</strong> Zn vary c<strong>on</strong>siderably between crude oils. Shaheen (1975) reported<br />

data <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> metals in bitumen including Cr (350 mg/kg), Cu (50 mg/kg), Ni (up to<br />

1,200 mg/kg), Zn (164 mg/kg). Lindgren (1996) reported lower c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> trace elements in a<br />
