<strong>and</strong> 34 mg/m 3 in stormwater from a predominantly residential catchment (Mosley & Peake 2001 <strong>and</strong><br />

Brown et al. 2003).<br />

Overseas study data is variable with some recent data having relatively low c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead<br />

(e.g., Kennedy 1995, Barrett et al. 1995c, Irish et al. 1995, Hares & Ward 1999, Shinya et al. 2000).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> ARC motorway data is similar to that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Marsalek et al. (1997) <strong>and</strong> Berbee et al. (1999). Marsalek<br />

(1997) reported EMC 10%ile <strong>and</strong> 90%ile c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1 <strong>and</strong> 166 mg/m 3 respectively (from a<br />

dataset <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 53 events). Marsalek et al. (1997) <strong>and</strong> Berbee et al. (1999) noted that their data reflected<br />

the reducti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead levels in petrol in Canada <strong>and</strong> the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s. Lead was removed from petrol<br />

in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> in 1996. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re does not appear to be any sites that were sampled for stormwater<br />

quality prior to <strong>and</strong> after the removal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> lead from petrol. Given that Pb was eliminated a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

years ago the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s measured in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> should reflect the decrease in Pb c<strong>on</strong>tent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fuel <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s from accumulated Pb in roadside <strong>and</strong> adjacent soils.<br />

Zinc data are available for urban run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f <strong>and</strong> motorway run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. Urban run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f data<br />

collected by ARC (1992) <strong>and</strong> also by Williams<strong>on</strong> (1985) indicates that New Zeal<strong>and</strong> urban run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tains elevated c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zn. Internati<strong>on</strong>al motorway data is variable ranging from average<br />

values less than 100 mg/m 3 to a 50%ile value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 337 mg/m 3 reported by Marsalek et al. (1997). Irish<br />

et al. (1995) reported median EMC data ranging from 50 mg/m 3 for simulated rainfall without traffic to<br />

263 mg/m 3 for a natural event (Table 4.5). Recent ARC motorway stormwater quality data has lower<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s than residential stormwater reported in ARC (1992).<br />

Hares & Ward (1999) presented data for several elements identified in secti<strong>on</strong>s 2 <strong>and</strong> 3 as being<br />

emitted by motor vehicles due to their inclusi<strong>on</strong> in sources such as brake pads. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y reported<br />

average c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Co <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 6.7 <strong>and</strong> 5.6 mg/m 3 ; Mo <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 <strong>and</strong> 19 mg/m 3 <strong>and</strong> Sb c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

8.6 <strong>and</strong> 5.8 mg/m 3 respectively for run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f from the M25 motorway at two locati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Batley et al. (1994) <strong>and</strong> Brockbank et al. (1999) reported the findings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> extensive studies <strong>on</strong> two<br />

roads in Sydney - Qantas Drive <strong>and</strong> Princes Highway. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies examined dissolved <strong>and</strong><br />

particulate metal c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s (rather than total c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s) <strong>and</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> in particulate<br />

material. As such, this data is discussed in following secti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Overall, there is a moderate body <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> data <strong>on</strong> total trace metal c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s in urban <strong>and</strong> roadway<br />

run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> available/published data has been reviewed in several publicati<strong>on</strong>s (e.g.,<br />

ARC 1992, Williams<strong>on</strong> 1995). Motorway stormwater quality data appears available from <strong>on</strong>ly two<br />

studies in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> that data is however limited both in extent <strong>and</strong> in quality.<br />

Specific studies in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> have provided informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the variability in trace element<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s through storm events. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is insufficient data in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> to provide any<br />

comment <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the elements Cr <strong>and</strong> Ni in stormwater with certainty.<br />

Currently (2003) extensive stormwater sampling is being undertaken by NIWA in Auckl<strong>and</strong> City as part<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormwater network c<strong>on</strong>sents research programmes for Metrowater/Auckl<strong>and</strong> City. As more <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

data becomes available it will provide a substantial additi<strong>on</strong> to the available data <strong>on</strong> stormwater quality<br />

in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> data will also assist in the determinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> source c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

4.3.2 Dissolved Metals<br />

Metals are distributed between dissolved (as defined by filtrati<strong>on</strong> using a 0.45 µm filter) <strong>and</strong> particulate<br />

phases in stormwater. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> proporti<strong>on</strong> dissolved is element specific <strong>and</strong> generally c<strong>on</strong>sistent between<br />

studies. Table 4.6 summarises the results <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dissolved <strong>and</strong> acid soluble metal measurements <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

stormwater samples carried out a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies undertaken in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> over the last 10<br />

years. Table 4.7 summarises other data for motorways.<br />
