5 PATHWAYS & FATE OF CONTAMINANTS<br />

EMITTED FROM TRANSPORT SOURCES<br />

5.1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> fate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants emitted from motor vehicles influences both their c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s in the<br />

receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>and</strong> the ensuing load entering the envir<strong>on</strong>ment in the short <strong>and</strong> the l<strong>on</strong>g term.<br />

Both load <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> have a role in the possible effects that c<strong>on</strong>taminants may have in<br />

freshwater <strong>and</strong> marine ecosystems. In a simplistic sense, the c<strong>on</strong>taminants can be partiti<strong>on</strong>ed into<br />

compartments in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> assessing their fate. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> principle pathways <strong>and</strong> compartments being:<br />

1. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere.<br />

2. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> road surface, collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> discharge system.<br />

3. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> freshwater receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

4. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> estuarine <strong>and</strong> marine receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

Within these compartments, the physical <strong>and</strong> chemical processes that determine fate are complex.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> different c<strong>on</strong>taminants derived from motor vehicles also means that the c<strong>on</strong>taminants<br />

are involved in a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> different physical, chemical <strong>and</strong> biochemical processes. In this secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the report, these processes are overviewed to provide an introducti<strong>on</strong> to the factors that influence the<br />

fate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants <strong>and</strong> their potential effects within freshwater <strong>and</strong> marine ecosystems. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> key<br />

issues <strong>and</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>s examined include:<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Transport</str<strong>on</strong>g>:<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Transport</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> depositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> airborne particulate matter.<br />

Physico-chemical processes <strong>on</strong> the street surface.<br />

Physico-chemical effects in stormwater receiving water systems.<br />

Fate:<br />

Fate in freshwater receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ments.<br />

Fate in estuarine <strong>and</strong> marine receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ments.<br />

5.2 <str<strong>on</strong>g>Transport</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> Depositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Airborne Particulate<br />

Matter<br />

5.2.1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> emissi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> particulates (from exhaust, tyres <strong>and</strong> other sources) to the atmosphere <strong>and</strong> their<br />

subsequent transport away from the point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> emissi<strong>on</strong> allows road vehicle emissi<strong>on</strong>s to potentially<br />

have effects within envir<strong>on</strong>ments adjacent to <strong>and</strong> remote to the source. As a result vehicle emissi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

can result in:<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

Depositi<strong>on</strong> into soils adjacent to or remote from the source.<br />

Sec<strong>on</strong>dary transport <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vehicle derived c<strong>on</strong>taminants (deposited to roadway surfaces <strong>and</strong> soil)<br />

to waterways (through erosi<strong>on</strong>, flood transport).<br />

Depositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> airborne particulates <strong>and</strong> gaseous pollutants <strong>on</strong>to freshwater.<br />
