Figure 6.2 – Lead <strong>and</strong> zinc in Waitakere City Streams. C<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s mg/kg. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> SQGs<br />

<strong>on</strong> the figures are the CCME <strong>and</strong> L<strong>on</strong>g et al (1995) sediment quality guidance values. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ANZECC (2000) ISQG-low <strong>and</strong> high are 50/220 mg/kg for Pb <strong>and</strong> 200/410 mg/kg for Zn<br />

(from Kingett Mitchell 2000).<br />

6.4.4 Sediment Toxicity<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> accumulati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants in freshwater <strong>and</strong> marine sediments has the potential to create toxic<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for invertebrates inhabiting the sediments. Toxicity however results from <strong>on</strong>ly a proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the c<strong>on</strong>taminant present. As such total c<strong>on</strong>taminant measurements do not provide an accurate reflecti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential toxicity. A number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies have shown that sediment with the same c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> metal<br />

can have different toxicity. Sediments with significantly differing c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a metal can exhibit<br />

similar toxicity (Di Toro et al. 1990).<br />
