6. ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS IN<br />

FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENTS<br />

6.1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>Freshwater</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ments in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> include a diverse range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> waterbodies from lakes to small<br />

lowl<strong>and</strong> streams <strong>and</strong> large rivers (refer references such as Jolly & Brown 1975, Viner 1987, Collier &<br />

Winterbourne 2000). This secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the report discusses the issues <strong>and</strong> effects associated with the<br />

entry <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> road run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f into freshwater receiving envir<strong>on</strong>ments. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> key issues associated with the<br />

discharge <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormwater derived from roads into freshwaters are:<br />

Hydrological effects<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Effects</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> water quality.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Effects</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> freshwater ecosystem (i.e., the biological community).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Effects</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> sediment quantity <strong>and</strong> quality.<br />

Bioaccumulati<strong>on</strong> (the uptake <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants by freshwater organisms).<br />

As noted in the introducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this report, this reports deals with the n<strong>on</strong>-physical effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormwater<br />

from roads <strong>and</strong> as such, hydrological issues associated with imperviousness are not dealt with.<br />

Herricks (1995), Burt<strong>on</strong> & Pitt (2002) <strong>and</strong> Schueler (2003) provide comprehensive reviews <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> urban run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f <strong>on</strong> freshwater envir<strong>on</strong>ments. Table 6.1 provides an overview <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the key impacts<br />

(toxic substances, clarity) that may be attributed to roadway run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f. Reviews <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> urban<br />

run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f <strong>on</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong> streams can be found in Williams<strong>on</strong> (1993) <strong>and</strong> Suren (2000). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods<br />

<strong>and</strong> tools currently used to assess envir<strong>on</strong>mental effects within freshwater envir<strong>on</strong>ments are<br />

discussed to identify whether the tools are sufficient to determine the effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> road transport<br />

c<strong>on</strong>taminant emissi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

transport.<br />
