High molecular weight PAHs are the sum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene,<br />

dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, chrysene, fluoranthene <strong>and</strong> pyrene.<br />

All <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the guidelines <strong>and</strong> triggers c<strong>on</strong>sist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> two c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> as a result produce three<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> ranges from low to high c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> lower guideline value or trigger is a<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> threshold below which adverse effects are unlikely. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> lower threshold does not<br />

necessarily c<strong>on</strong>stitute a ‘background’ c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> upper threshold is a probable effects<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a relatively high probability that adverse effects will occur in a biological<br />

community inhabiting sediment c<strong>on</strong>taining c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants above this value. Between the<br />

two thresholds is a c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> range where the probability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> adverse effects arising is lower than<br />

would occur when the c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> was above the probable effects threshold.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> L<strong>on</strong>g et al. (1995) sediment quality guidelines have been the most utilised guideline values. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ANZECC (2000) sediment quality triggers are more comm<strong>on</strong>ly used in New Zeal<strong>and</strong> since their<br />

publicati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

6.4.2 Quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Detenti<strong>on</strong> P<strong>on</strong>d Sediments<br />

A comparis<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> data for the quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> particulate material <strong>on</strong> road surfaces (Table 3.4 <strong>and</strong> Kennedy<br />

2003) <strong>and</strong> in stormwater (Refer Secti<strong>on</strong> 4) indicates that the no-effects guidelines (e.g., the ANZECC<br />

ISQG-low) are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten exceeded for metals in those materials. For PAHs the guidelines are typically<br />

exceeded for some guideline such as the TEL. Median <strong>and</strong> the high guidelines for PAHs (levels at which<br />

effects would be expected) are not exceeded in the data comm<strong>on</strong>ly reported in the literature.<br />

A number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies have examined the quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sediments in detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds that have accumulated<br />

stormwater particulates. Cox & Livingst<strong>on</strong>e (1997) carried out a review <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormwater<br />

sediments (p<strong>on</strong>ds <strong>and</strong> a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> other stormwater sediments). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> study showed that c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Pb <strong>and</strong> PAHs in p<strong>on</strong>d sediments typically exceeded the Florida Sediment Quality Assessment Guidelines<br />

(the TEL = Threshold <str<strong>on</strong>g>Effects</str<strong>on</strong>g> Level). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sediments in detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest for two<br />

reas<strong>on</strong>s. Firstly, p<strong>on</strong>ds are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten established as wildlife facilities <strong>and</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>dly similar accumulati<strong>on</strong><br />

processes occur in natural wetl<strong>and</strong>s which stormwater may discharge into.<br />

Sedimentati<strong>on</strong> is the main mechanism for removal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> particulate material <strong>and</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>taminants<br />

associated with them in p<strong>on</strong>ds <strong>and</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong>s. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> slow movement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the water in the p<strong>on</strong>ds allows<br />

sediment to drop out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the water under gravity. Adsorpti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dissolved substances <strong>on</strong>to suspended<br />

particulate matter, bottom sediment, vegetati<strong>on</strong>, plankt<strong>on</strong> or detritus may occur in a p<strong>on</strong>d, reducing<br />

phosphate, amm<strong>on</strong>iacal nitrogen <strong>and</strong> trace elements (ARC, 1992). Precipitati<strong>on</strong> may result in removal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

dissolved species from soluti<strong>on</strong>. Some trace elements may form precipitates with sulphides in areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

low or negative redox potential, or form hydroxides under more oxidising c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s (ARC, 1992).<br />

Volatilisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>taminants such as Hg <strong>and</strong> hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s, may also occur as a result <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaporati<strong>on</strong> or<br />

under windy c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Bottom sediment from stormwater detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten c<strong>on</strong>taminated with trace metals <strong>and</strong> manmade<br />

organic compounds. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is sediment quality data from a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stormwater treatment p<strong>on</strong>ds<br />

or streams that receive stormwater in the Auckl<strong>and</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se include the UNITEC detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds<br />

(Mt Albert), <strong>and</strong> Link Drive detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds (Takapuna) that receive stormwater from a commercial<br />

catchment. And the Hugo Johns<strong>on</strong> Drive p<strong>on</strong>ds (Southdown) receive stormwater from an industrial<br />

catchment. No data appears available for stormwater p<strong>on</strong>ds associated solely with road/highway run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f.<br />

Sampled detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d sediments (in New Zeal<strong>and</strong>) from the industrial stormwater catchments were<br />

found to c<strong>on</strong>tain elevated c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cd, Hg, <strong>and</strong> Zn (Table 6.9). Lower c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s were<br />

found in commercial catchments. High c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pb were found in detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>d sediments<br />

from the commercial <strong>and</strong> industrial catchments. Copper c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s were much lower in the Link<br />

Drive p<strong>on</strong>ds, receiving stormwater from a commercial catchment, than in other p<strong>on</strong>ds from commercial or<br />

industrial catchments.<br />
