Brief Soldier: Describe the symptoms of a casualty with a mild or severe<br />

airway obstruction. Ask the Soldier what should be done, and score step 1<br />

according to the answer. Tell the Soldier to do all of the first aid steps<br />

required to clear an object from the casualty's throat. Tell the Soldier to<br />

demonstrate where to stand, how to position his/her hands, and how to<br />

position the casualty <strong>for</strong> the thrusts. The Soldier must tell you how the<br />

thrusts should be done. Ensure that the Soldier understands that he/she<br />

must not in fact do the thrusts. Do not evaluate steps 3 and 4 in the<br />

simulated mode.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Measures GO NO GO<br />

1. Determined if the casualty needed help. —— ——<br />

2. Per<strong>for</strong>med abdominal or chest thrusts, as required. —— ——<br />

a. Positioned hands <strong>for</strong> the thrusts.<br />

b. Gave the thrusts well.<br />

3. Continued abdominal or chest thrusts, as required. —— ——<br />

4. If the obstruction was cleared, watched the casualty and —— ——<br />

checked <strong>for</strong> other injuries, if necessary.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>m First Aid to Prevent or Control Shock<br />

Conditions: You see a casualty who is breathing. There is no uncontrolled<br />

bleeding. The casualty has one or more of the symptoms of shock. You<br />

will need a field jacket and blanket or poncho.<br />

Standards: Attempt to prevent a casualty from going into shock by<br />

placing him the correct position, loosening binding clothes, calming and<br />

reassuring the casualty, and providing shade from direct sunlight during<br />

hot weather or covering to prevent body heat loss during cold weather. Do<br />

not cause further injury to the casualty.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

1. Check the casualty <strong>for</strong> signs and symptoms of shock.<br />

a. Sweaty but cool skin.<br />

b. Pale skin.<br />

c. Restlessness or nervousness.<br />
