Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

d. Release the charging handle; do not ride the charging handle.<br />

e. Tap the <strong>for</strong>ward assist to ensure that the bolt is closed.<br />

f. Squeeze the trigger and try to fire the rifle.<br />

Note: Apply immediate action only once <strong>for</strong> a stoppage. If the rifle fails to fire a second<br />

time <strong>for</strong> the same malfunction, remedial action should be per<strong>for</strong>med.<br />

2. Per<strong>for</strong>m remedial action.<br />

a. Correct an obstructed chamber.<br />

(1) Lock the charging handle to the rear.<br />

(2) Place the weapon on SAFE.<br />

(3) Remove the magazine.<br />

(4) Inspect the chamber.<br />

(5) Remove obstructions from the chamber by—<br />

(a) Angling the ejection port downward and shaking the rifle to<br />

remove single rounds.<br />

(b) Using a pointed object to lessen jammed rounds then shake<br />

out when loose.<br />

(c) Using a cleaning rod to push out a round or cartridge case<br />

stuck in the chamber.<br />

b. Correct a mechanical malfunction.<br />

(1) Clear the weapon.<br />

(2) Disassemble the weapon.<br />

(3) Inspect <strong>for</strong> dirty, corroded, missing, or broken parts.<br />

(4) Clean dirty or corroded parts.<br />

(5) Replace missing or broken parts.<br />

(6) Assemble the weapon.<br />

(7) Per<strong>for</strong>m a function check.<br />

Evaluation Preparation: Setup: Provide an M4 or M4A1 carbine loaded<br />

with dummy ammunition.<br />

Brief Soldier: Tell the Soldier that the rifle has stopped firing. Tell the<br />

Soldier that the weapon is cool and that he/she is to per<strong>for</strong>m the immediate<br />

or remedial actions on the rifle. All steps must be per<strong>for</strong>med in the proper<br />

sequence.<br />
