Engage Targets with an M16-Series Rifle/M4 Series Carbine<br />

Conditions: Given a loaded M16/M4-series rifle/carbine, magazines,<br />

ammunition, individual combat equipment, and stationary or moving<br />

targets (personnel or equipment) at engageable ranges.<br />

Standards: Detect, identify as threat, and determine range to targets in<br />

assigned sector of fire. Fire the M16-series rifle/M4-series carbine, while<br />

applying correct fundamentals of marksmanship and aiming and<br />

engagement techniques so that each target is hit or suppressed.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

1. Detect targets by using one of the following methods:<br />

Note: Detection of targets depends on your position, your skill in scanning, and your ability<br />

to observe the area and recognize target indicators.<br />

a. Self-preservation method.<br />

b. 50-meter overlapping strip method.<br />

c. Maintaining observation of the area.<br />

2. Select position.<br />

Note: Your situation should affect your physical positioning and firing stance. Your<br />

position should protect you from enemy fire and observation, yet allow you to place<br />

effective fire on targets in your sector of fire. Your position may vary from a fixed location<br />

to a temporary location during movement.<br />

3. Determine range to targets.<br />

a. 100-meter unit of measure method.<br />

b. Appearance of objects method.<br />

c. Front sight post method.<br />

4. Identify targets in your designated sector of fire.<br />

5. Fire on targets using correct fundamentals of marksmanship and appropriate<br />

aiming and engagement techniques.<br />

a. Apply the fundamentals of marksmanship.<br />

(1) Steady position.<br />

(2) Aiming.<br />

(3) Breath control.<br />

(4) Trigger squeeze.<br />

b. Use appropriate aiming and engagement techniques as needed.<br />

(1) Combat fire techniques.<br />

(2) Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) firing.<br />

(3) Night firing.<br />

(4) Moving targets.<br />

(5) Short-range marksmanship techniques.<br />

c. Fire on the targets until they are destroyed, suppressed, or you receive<br />

an order to cease fire.<br />
