Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

Note: If the weapon is not cocked, you cannot place the selector lever on SAFE.<br />

3. Remove the magazine.<br />

4. Lock the bolt open.<br />

a. Pull the charging handle to the rear.<br />

b. Press the bottom portion of the bolt catch, locking the bolt open.<br />

c. Return the charging handle to the <strong>for</strong>ward position.<br />

d. Place the selector lever on SAFE.<br />

Note: If the weapon was cocked be<strong>for</strong>e locking the bolt open, then the selector lever should<br />

already be on SAFE.<br />

5. Remove any ammunition from the receiver and chamber.<br />

6. Return the bolt to the closed position.<br />

a. Press the upper portion of the bolt catch allowing the bolt to go<br />

<strong>for</strong>ward.<br />

b. Place selector lever on SEMI.<br />

c. Pull the trigger to release the pressure on the firing pin spring.<br />

d. Close the ejection port cover.<br />

Evaluation Preparation: Setup: At a test site, provide an M4 or M4A1<br />

carbine loaded with dummy ammunition.<br />

Brief Soldier: Tell the Soldier to unload the carbine.<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Measures GO NO GO<br />

1. Pointed the weapon muzzle in a safe direction. —— ——<br />

2. Placed the selector lever on SAFE. —— ——<br />

3. Removed the magazine. —— ——<br />
