Note: Slow scan search technique uses the same process as the rapid scan but with more<br />

intent; this means a slower, side-to-side movement and more frequent pauses.<br />

(3) Use detailed search technique (figure 071-331-0804-5).<br />

Note: The detailed search is like the slow scan, but searching smaller areas with frequent<br />

pauses and almost incremental movement.<br />

b. Conduct a visual search in limited visibility.<br />

(1) Accustom your eyes to low light be<strong>for</strong>e night operations by doing<br />

one of the following:<br />

(a) Stay in a secure, darkened area <strong>for</strong> 30 minutes (<strong>for</strong> example,<br />

assembly area at night, initial rally point).<br />

(b) Stay in a red-lighted area <strong>for</strong> 20 minutes, followed by 10<br />

minutes in darkness, if applicable.<br />

(c) Wear red goggles <strong>for</strong> 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes in<br />

darkness, if applicable.<br />

(2) Scan areas at night (figure 071-331-0804-6).<br />

(a) Move your eyes in short, quick, irregular movements.<br />

(b) Use off-center vision to observe specific objects by looking<br />

about 6 to 10 degrees left, right, above, or below them.<br />

(c) Outlines that should be obscured.<br />

(d) Bright colors or reflections that should be subdued.<br />

(e) Tracks, footpaths, and piles of dirt and litter.<br />

(f) Over clearing of fields of fire and observation.<br />
