Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

(2) When a casualty is placed lengthwise, load the casualty with his or<br />

her head pointing <strong>for</strong>ward, toward the direction of travel.<br />

(3) Ensure each litter casualty is secured to the litter. Use litter straps,<br />

if available.<br />

(4) Secure each litter to the vehicle as it is loaded into place. Make<br />

sure each litter is secured.<br />

Note: Unload casualties in reverse order, most seriously injured casualty first.<br />

Evaluation Preparation: Setup: Provide the Soldier with litters, straps, a<br />

casualty, military vehicle(s), and assistants.<br />

Brief Soldier: Tell the soldier that he has a stable casualty requiring<br />

evacuation and that a vehicle is available. He has assistants available, who<br />

must be directed in their ef<strong>for</strong>ts. Describe the casualty’s injuries and tell<br />

the soldier to determine what priority to assign to the casualty, and then<br />

load the casualty <strong>for</strong> evacuation.<br />

Transport a Casualty<br />

Conditions: You have evaluated and given first aid to a casualty. You<br />

need to move the casualty to get further medical aid and may have to<br />

remove him/her from a vehicle be<strong>for</strong>e transporting. Assistance from other<br />

Soldiers may be available. You will need material that will not cut or bind<br />

the casualty (cravat bandages or litter straps), poncho, shirts or jackets,<br />

and poles or tree limbs. A SKED or Talon litter may be available.<br />

Standards: Transport the casualty using an appropriate carry or litter<br />

without dropping or causing further injury to the casualty.<br />
