Per<strong>for</strong>mance Steps<br />

e. Order the individual to "HALT" when the individual is within 2 to 3<br />

meters from your position.<br />

Note: Halt the individual at a location that provides protection to you and prevents them<br />

from escaping if they are deemed unfriendly.<br />

f. Issue the challenge.<br />

Note: You may ask the individual questions where only a friendly person could give the<br />

correct answer.<br />

g. Determine if the individual is friendly based upon their return of the<br />

correct password and your own situational awareness.<br />

h. Detain an individual who cannot be identified as friendly by having<br />

them disarm themselves, and wait until your chain of command provides<br />

additional instructions.<br />

i. Allow the individual to pass if the individual returns the correct<br />

password and you are convinced the individual is friendly.<br />

j. Report the event to your chain of command.<br />

3. Challenge a group that enters your area.<br />

Note: These procedure and precautions are similar to those <strong>for</strong> challenging a single person.<br />

a. Cover the group with your weapon without disclosing your position.<br />

b. Order the group to halt be<strong>for</strong>e they are close enough to pose a threat to<br />

you.<br />

c. Command "WHO IS THERE?"<br />

d. Order the leader of the group to "ADVANCE TO BE RECOGNIZED."<br />

e. Order the group leader to "HALT" when the individual is within 2 to 3<br />

meters from your position.<br />

Note: Ensure only the group leader advances and halts at a location that provides protection<br />

to you and prevents the leader from escaping if they are deemed unfriendly.<br />

f. Issue the challenge to only the group leader.<br />

Note: You may ask the individual questions where only a friendly person could give the<br />

correct answer.<br />

g. Determine if the individual is friendly based upon their return of the<br />

correct password and your own situational awareness.<br />

h. Allow the group to pass if the group leader returns the correct password<br />

and you are convinced the individual is friendly by having the leader identify<br />

each member of his group as they pass through.<br />

i. Detain the group leader who is not identified as friendly by having<br />

them disarm themselves, in<strong>for</strong>m their group to wait, and they themselves wait<br />

until your chain of command provides additional instructions.<br />

j. Detain any individual in the group not recognized by the group leader,<br />

by disarming them, and having them wait until your chain of command provides<br />

additional instructions.<br />

k. Report the event to your chain of command.<br />
