Chapter 2 Community Development
Most recently, façade improvements have begun at the north 100 block of Market Street,
including new paint, awnings, signage, lighting, glass and some molding detailing. The
south end of Market Street has also recently been revitalized, including a new bus center
and newly remodeled retail space. 1 Also at the south end the City envisions expanding its
Civic Center presence. 2
Market Street—Downtown
Prairie Avenue
Prairie Avenue is located within three Redevelopment Project Areas, including the
Manchester-Prairie, Century, and Imperial-Prairie. From Century Boulevard to Imperial
Highway, the corridor is heavily dominated by service and retail uses, including many
auto services, which create incompatibilities with retail uses and residential development
along the corridor. Large portions of this area are developed with residential uses; and
many properties are abandoned, underutilized, or vacant. Significant land uses in this
stretch include a vibrant and active Mexican Mercado on the west side of Prairie Avenue
at Lennox Boulevard. Except for the activity occurring at the Mexican Mercado, however,
there is moderate pedestrian activity within this area. Between Florence Avenue and
Century Boulevard, land uses on the east side of Prairie Avenue consist of the Inglewood
Park Cemetery, The Forum, and the Hollywood Turf Club. On the west, land uses north
of Manchester Boulevard are dominated by residential uses, and the Daniel Freeman
Hospital and supporting services. South of Manchester Boulevard in this area, land uses
are largely legal-nonconforming residential uses interspersed with commercial
development.
