2.2 Vehicle Dimensions<br />

2.2.1 Statutory Dimensions<br />

The Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations, effective from<br />

August 1984, contain maximum dimensions for vehicles which are shown in Table 2.2.1.1.<br />

2.2.1.2 Table 2.2.1.2 shows the maximum weight of vehicles for the new legislation and Tables 2.2.1.4<br />

- 2.2.1.7 show how these are qualified.<br />

2.2.1.3 The maximum permissible weights transmitted to the road surface, also contained in the<br />

Regulations, are as follows:<br />

(i) For one wheel, where no other wheel is in the same line transversely, not greater than 4.5<br />

tonnes<br />

(ii) For two wheels in the same line transversely, not greater than 9 tonnes<br />

(iii) For two wheels in the same line transversely, if each wheel is fitted with 2 pneumatic tyres<br />

not greater than 10 tonnes.<br />

(iv) For more than 2 wheels in the same line transversely, not greater than 11 tonnes.<br />

2.2.1.4 Maximum swept turning circles for vehicles given in the Road Traffic (Construction and<br />

Maintenance) Regulations are shown in Table 2.2.1.8.<br />

2.2.1.5 Under the legislation the Commissioner also has powers to license vehicles in excess of the<br />

dimensions or weights shown in the tables.
