for a probation violation.” A white female said treatment will vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to how the<br />

youth responds to the probation <strong>of</strong>ficer. “I feel they treat you like you treat them. If you<br />

treat them bad, then they treat you bad. If you give them respect, then they give you<br />

respect.”<br />

A black felt that all people were not treated alike because whites are given more<br />

chances. “I don’t th<strong>in</strong>k you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d one white from Waterloo up here right now. I th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

they get more chances. <strong>The</strong>y get to get out, if not then they get put <strong>in</strong> a group home. A<br />

white were gonna trust him.”<br />

A white male also did not feel that probation <strong>of</strong>ficer’s treat all people alike. “No,<br />

because I’ve been lied to by my probation <strong>of</strong>ficer.” One white male got so disgusted with<br />

his treatment that he stopped go<strong>in</strong>g to see his P0. “<strong>The</strong>y don’t treat me alike, so I just<br />

don’t go to his place anymore.”<br />

Respect<br />

When asked whether they had any respect for their probation <strong>of</strong>ficer, 92 percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> whites and 75 percent <strong>of</strong> blacks responded that sometimes or most <strong>of</strong> the time to<br />

always that they did respect their probation <strong>of</strong>ficer. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews reflected similar<br />

views.<br />

A black female felt her P0 was really try<strong>in</strong>g to help her out <strong>of</strong> the system. “She’s<br />

just ma<strong>in</strong>ly concerned about me gett<strong>in</strong>g out. A person who is try<strong>in</strong>g to help me out.”<br />

Another black seemed concerned about her relationship with her probation
