<strong>of</strong> del<strong>in</strong>quent cases identified as white (n= 507) were selected for the analyses. <strong>The</strong> total<br />

number <strong>of</strong> whites identified was 8,282. American Native Indians referred to juvenile<br />

court services were also selected from random pool <strong>of</strong> referrals. Due to the relatively few<br />

number <strong>of</strong> studies <strong>of</strong> juvenile case process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g these people (Pope and<br />

Feyerherm, 1990a), oversampl<strong>in</strong>g was employed (n= 985 out <strong>of</strong> 1,440). All blacks (n<br />

475), Hispanics (n= 83), and Asians (n= 51) referred to juvenile court services dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

designated time period were <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the analyses. <strong>The</strong> total sample used for<br />

Woodbury county is 2,101.<br />

Polk County: As <strong>in</strong> Woodbury county, <strong>in</strong>formation was collected on Whites,<br />

Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and American Native Indians. Due to the manner <strong>in</strong> which<br />

records are kept <strong>in</strong> this particular county, 5,000 to 7,000 files could not be located. It is<br />

believed these records have been either destroyed and/or misplaced. Thus, the number <strong>of</strong><br />

referrals <strong>in</strong> Polk county is actually higher than the identified 9,353 referrals <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

del<strong>in</strong>quent <strong>of</strong>fenses. A random sample <strong>of</strong> referrals <strong>of</strong> del<strong>in</strong>quent cases identified as white<br />

(n= 1005) were selected from 7,515 for the analyses. <strong>Disproportionate</strong> random sampl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was used for blacks (n= 788 out <strong>of</strong> 1,632). All cases <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g Hispanic youth (n= 119),<br />

Asian youth (n= 66), and American Native Indians (n= 21) were also recorded. <strong>The</strong> total<br />

sample used for this county is 1,199.<br />

Scott County: A total <strong>of</strong> 4,266 referrals were identified dur<strong>in</strong>g the twelve year time<br />

frame. <strong>The</strong> small total was the
