Chapter Ten<br />

<strong>Youth</strong> Scott County<br />

<strong>The</strong>re were 120 youth that participated <strong>in</strong> a self report study. Of these, 66 were<br />

white and 54 were black. Also, 48 youth were <strong>in</strong>terviewed from Scott county. Twentytwo<br />

were black and twenty-six were white. Forty-one were male and eight were female.<br />

Both races feel there is discrim<strong>in</strong>ation aga<strong>in</strong>st blacks, however, both groups are<br />

optimistic about an improv<strong>in</strong>g future. When asked about police, both races responded<br />

negatively. <strong>The</strong>y believed police used unfair treatment. <strong>The</strong> youth, however, believed<br />

their probation <strong>of</strong>ficers displayed fair treatment and responded more positively to<br />

questions referr<strong>in</strong>g to their probation <strong>of</strong>ficers. Results from the self—reports <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />

teachers show equal treatment to all youth. F<strong>in</strong>ally, both races blame themselves for their<br />

current situation.<br />

General Perceptions<br />

Discrim<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Questions were asked concern<strong>in</strong>g general views <strong>of</strong> discrim<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong> our society,<br />

police, probation <strong>of</strong>ficers, school, and who they blame for their current situation.<br />

Responses to these closed ended questions are presented <strong>in</strong> Tables One and Two at the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> this chapter.<br />

Both blacks and whites felt overall that racial discrim<strong>in</strong>ation is gett<strong>in</strong>g worse. A<br />
