Black youth<br />

He’s nice. He talks to you about your problems if you have any.<br />

She th<strong>in</strong>ks I’m honest with her. I can tell her anyth<strong>in</strong>g. I trust her a lot.<br />

She does a good job.<br />

I feel he’s like my friend.<br />

He’s a good person. He’s nice. He listens to what you gotta say. He<br />

understands stuff.<br />

Hispanic youth<br />

I like him. I th<strong>in</strong>k that he does a real good job.<br />

He did a good job for me. I wanted to come home. I like<br />

it. He’s really helpful. If I have a problem, I can talk to him. And if I’m<br />

stuck or someth<strong>in</strong>g, he 11 try to do everyth<strong>in</strong>g he can to help me.<br />

For one th<strong>in</strong>g, I respect her. I th<strong>in</strong>k they’re just do<strong>in</strong>g their job.<br />

Native American youth<br />

He is do<strong>in</strong>g a good job.<br />

- it might be good advice or bad advice. Most likely it’s good advice,<br />

<strong>The</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g a probation <strong>of</strong>ficer does not seem to appeal to the youth <strong>of</strong><br />

Woodbury county. <strong>The</strong> self reports <strong>in</strong>dicate that 74 percent <strong>of</strong> the whites and 94 percent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the blacks would never become a probation <strong>of</strong>ficer. Eighteen percent <strong>of</strong> the whites said<br />

they would sometimes be a probation <strong>of</strong>ficer and 13 percent <strong>of</strong> the whites said they<br />

would like to be a probation <strong>of</strong>ficer. Only 6 percent <strong>of</strong> the blacks said sometimes while 0<br />

percent said they would like to be a probation <strong>of</strong>ficer (Tables 5, 6).<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews also support the above ideas. When asked <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terview,<br />

“Would you like to be a P0”, the answer was “No.” <strong>The</strong>re were not any quotes to really
