treated fairly by police. Twenty-six percent <strong>of</strong> the blacks felt they were never treated<br />

fairly by police (Tables 3, 4).<br />

Most white youth, from the <strong>in</strong>terviews, do not have a problem with the treatment<br />

they receive from the police. White youth who do not feel police treat them fairly are<br />

those most <strong>in</strong> trouble. Black youth have more to say on the topic <strong>of</strong> unfair treatment.<br />

However, there are some cases where black youth believe they are treated fairly by the<br />

police. Quotes follow from white and black youth <strong>in</strong> response to the question, “Do you<br />

feel the police treat you fairly”<br />

White youth<br />

Yeah, I guess so.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y treated me like anyone else.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were pretty big assholes, but they’re paid to be that. <strong>The</strong>y were as<br />

fair as they could be <strong>in</strong> a situation like that.<br />

Black youth<br />

No. This one girl waited up <strong>in</strong> my yard for me because she wanted to fight<br />

me. And she was white so I went up there and she said ‘me and you are<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to fight.’ I said, ‘I’ll beat you up.’ We had people <strong>in</strong> our house for<br />

DHS and they was out there and she pushed me so I punched her <strong>in</strong> the<br />

stomach and the are and the police came and asked about it. He said they<br />

(the daughter, mother and dad) are fil<strong>in</strong>g charges. I said ‘she waited <strong>in</strong> my<br />

yard for me and pushed me first.’ He said he didn’t care and wrote me up<br />

but did noth<strong>in</strong>g to her. And at the park
