Explanations <strong>of</strong> Specific F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs (Phase One)= most cited family distrust and<br />

<strong>Disproportionate</strong> <strong>Overrepresentation</strong> <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>orities <strong>in</strong> System<br />

Feel<strong>in</strong>gs About Study= some did not want to participate and/or agree with the<br />

study. Some questioned fairness <strong>of</strong> questions and def<strong>in</strong>itions <strong>of</strong> variables. Most<br />

did not express thoughts one way or another. Small number <strong>in</strong>dicated the study<br />

was worthwhile or needed.<br />

Suggestions for Change (alleviate disproportionate representation)<br />

Major themes were: need more diversified staff, establish alternative<br />

programm<strong>in</strong>g, and rectify issues regard<strong>in</strong>g the lack <strong>of</strong> transportation and allow m<strong>in</strong>orities<br />

the ability to provide adequate supervision for youth to the issue is not a concern <strong>of</strong> the<br />

court, there is a need on the part <strong>of</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>orities to adapt to cultural expectations or<br />

create programs for themselves.
