The Protected Landscape Approach: Linking Nature, Culture and Community Kosciuszko National Park was the largest national park in Australia at the time of its establishment (1944). A new management plan, being developed in cooperation with neighbouring communities, will recognise the rich cultural heritage of the park’s landscape, including Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal values. New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, re-inscribed as a Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List in 1994, is managed jointly by traditional owners and the Australian government. For example, the traditional practice of selective vegetation burning (foreground), part of Anungu “caring for country”, has been adapted as a management tool in the park. Jane Lennon Plate 6
