<strong>The</strong> <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Landscape</strong> <strong>Approach</strong>: Linking Nature, Culture and Community<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jizera Mountains <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Landscape</strong> Area<br />

(PLA) is one of 24 PLAs in the Czech Republic,<br />

and protects mixed beech <strong>for</strong>est and peat bogs in<br />

the upland areas. Local NGOs and civic<br />

associations are playing an important role in<br />

encouraging sustainable development in this<br />

Meadows in the White Carpathian mountains (Czech and<br />

Slovak Republics) support rich biodiversity, particularly<br />

orchids such as Orchis mascula (see right). To maintain<br />

meadow ecosystems in the <strong>Protected</strong> <strong>Landscape</strong> Area, NGOs<br />

are working with local farmers to continue traditional<br />

haymaking practices and reintroduce sheep grazing.<br />
