3. Remove head bolts (5, 6, 7, 8) and cylinder<br />
head, Fig. 6. Discard cylinder head gasket.<br />
NOTE: Engines manufactured before 940501xx<br />
were equipped with sealing washers under<br />
cylinder head bolts (5) and (6).<br />
Repeat for other cylinder head.<br />

1. Thread rocker arm support screw into cylinder<br />
head a few turns.<br />
CAUTION<br />
PREVENT EYE INJURY!<br />

1. Check cylinder head, Fig. 9.<br />
NOTE: Be sure all gasket material is removed from<br />
surfaces before checking. Use a gasket<br />
scraper if necessary.<br />
a. Inspect cylinder head for cracks or damage.<br />
b. Use a surface plate or straight edge (1) and<br />
check cylinder head mounting surface for<br />
distortion.<br />
Replace the cylinder head if the mounting surfaces<br />
are distorted more than 0.004” (0.1 mm).<br />
• WEAR EYE protection when using<br />
Valve Spring Compressor.<br />
NOTE: Place a shop rag or short section of rubber<br />
fuel line under valves inside combustion<br />
chamber to hold valve in place while compressing<br />
spring.<br />
2. Compress valve spring and retainer with Valve<br />
Spring Compressor (3) #19347, Fig. 7.<br />
3. Remove valve spring retainer locks (2).<br />
4. Gradually release pressure on the valve spring<br />
compressor. Remove valve spring retainer and<br />
valve spring.<br />
