function. The broad, general, and enduring role <strong>for</strong> which an organization is designed,<br />
equipped, and trained. (Approved <strong>for</strong> replacement <strong>of</strong> “functions” and its definition in<br />

functional component command. A command normally, but not necessarily, composed <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> two or more Military Departments which may be established across <strong>the</strong> range<br />
<strong>of</strong> military operations to per<strong>for</strong>m particular operational missions that may be <strong>of</strong> short<br />

Component personnel by <strong>the</strong> Secretary concerned, and per<strong>for</strong>med by <strong>the</strong>m in connection<br />
with <strong>the</strong> prescribed activities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organization in which <strong>the</strong>y are assigned with or<br />

integration. 1. In <strong>for</strong>ce protection, <strong>the</strong> synchronized transfer <strong>of</strong> units into an operational<br />
commander’s <strong>for</strong>ce prior to mission execution. 2. The arrangement <strong>of</strong> military <strong>for</strong>ces<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir actions to create a <strong>for</strong>ce that operates by engaging as a whole. 3. In<br />
photography, a process by which <strong>the</strong> average radar picture seen on several scans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
time base may be obtained on a print, or <strong>the</strong> process by which several photographic<br />

irregular warfare. A violent struggle among state and non-state actors <strong>for</strong> legitimacy and<br />

joint. Connotes activities, operations, organizations, etc., in which elements <strong>of</strong> two or more<br />

joint <strong>for</strong>ce commander. A general term applied to a combatant commander, subunified<br />
commander, or joint task <strong>for</strong>ce commander authorized to exercise combatant command<br />
