DRAFT RECOMMENDED STANDARD FOR SPACE LINK EXTENSION SERVICE MANAGEMENT
3 SLE SERVICE MANAGEMENT DOCUMENT EXCHANGE
3.1 GENERAL
SLE-SM operations are realized through the execution of procedures that involve the
exchange of messages that are contained within SLE-SM documents. All exchanges of SLE-
SM messages conform to a document exchange protocol that ensures that
a) operations are invoked only by entities that are authorized within the scope of a given
Service Agreement;
b) documents are validated as properly formatted SLE-SM documents;
c) documents that are not properly formatted SLE-SM documents are handled in a
context-appropriate manner; and
d) messages contained within SLE-SM documents are processed in the proper sequence.
The SLE-SM document exchange protocol operates across a communication service
connecting UM and CM. Because SLE-SM is intended to operate using a variety of transport
technologies (e.g., email, Transmission Control Protocol [TCP] connections, HyperText
Transfer Protocol [HTTP], Simple Object Access Protocol [SOAP]), the details of the
establishment and maintenance of the communication service are specific to transport
technology used. However, all underlying communication services must perform a minimum
set of functions in order to support the proper operation of the SLE-SM document exchange
protocol. In a bilateral agreement, a UM and a CM must select a communication service that
performs the required functions; this Recommended Standard does not cover such
arrangements.
Figure 3-1 illustrates the relationship between the underlying communication service, SLE-
SM document exchange protocol, SLE-SM message type, and SLE-SM operation
procedures.
Subsection 3.2 describes the functions of the underlying communication service. Subsection 3.3
defines the SLE-SM document exchange protocol. Subsection 3.3.3.1 defines the SLE-SM
operation procedure patterns. Each SLE-SM operation procedure uses one of three operation
procedure patterns: two-phase operation, three-phase operation, or notified operation,
which are specified in 3.1, 3.4.2, and 3.4.3, respectively. These operation procedure patterns
employ combinations the SLE-SM message types (invocation, return, notification, and
confirmation) to exchange the information in support of the procedures.
