Infact, in some cases, for-pr<strong>of</strong>it, socially responsible businesses canbecome ISOs, investing <strong>the</strong>ir own capital in local enterprises <strong>the</strong>ydeem central to <strong>the</strong>ir supply chains and providing an array <strong>of</strong>support services to <strong>the</strong>se enterprises to help <strong>the</strong>m stabilize production,expand <strong>the</strong>ir local benefits, and raise <strong>the</strong>ir product quality.Dean’s Beans—a Fair Trade c<strong>of</strong>fee importer and retailer in <strong>the</strong>United States—is one such example (See box on following page).92ISOs: Increasing Equity and TransparencyAs a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir “mid-level” status in many developmentefforts, ISOs are well positioned to improve <strong>the</strong> transparency,accountability, and inclusiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organizations <strong>the</strong>ysupport, particularly in <strong>the</strong> beginning phases <strong>of</strong> a communityenterprise. ISOs that <strong>of</strong>fer projects or services that are in highdemand can insist that communities meet governance and partic-
