Limit Number <strong>of</strong> Property Access PointsControlling and limiting the number <strong>of</strong> driveways on arterial and collector roadwayscould help to achieve the objectives <strong>of</strong> access management. Driveways should besufficiently spaced to minimize conflicts from adjacent driveway movements andfrom through traffic on the adjacent street system. Control <strong>of</strong> driveway spacinggenerally requires consideration <strong>of</strong> the following two criteria: (1) properties shouldbe limited to the fewest possible access points and (2) access spacing should becontrolled to minimize traffic conflicts.Each single-family residential property should be permitted only one driveway. Theseproperties do not generate high traffic volumes and present minimal conflicts with localstreet traffic movements.For commercial properties, the number <strong>of</strong> access points that should be allowed dependson the length <strong>of</strong> property frontage along an arterial or collector street and the volume <strong>of</strong>traffic generated by the development. A general rule <strong>of</strong> thumb requires a property togenerate more than 500 trips per hour (typically equivalent to 5,000 trips per day) tojustify more than one driveway.Should a property generate thishigh volume <strong>of</strong> trips, a seconddriveway may be considered if itsfrontage exceeds 600 feet. Threedriveways may be considered if thedevelopment’s frontage exceeds1,300 feet. A second or thirdaccess driveway should only begranted if a traffic impact study forthe property indicates a need fortwo or three access driveways tomaintain traffic flow on the street.On a median-divided street, asecond driveway can be approvedbut limited to right-turn entering andexiting movements. If more thanone access driveway is required fora major traffic generating property,then the criteria for control <strong>of</strong> theaccess spacing should be applied.On some properties it may bepossible to minimize the number <strong>of</strong>access points by sharing accessbetween adjacent properties.
