Floyd County, IndianaFloyd County Thoroughfare PlanSection 3–Alternatives Developmentd. GalenaGalena is located on US 150 approximately 5 miles west of the US 150 and I-64interchange. Galena is a small town like area with development patterns presentlybeing centered on the US Highway. New residential development has taken placeadjacent to the highway. Presently, there is a limited amount of commercialdevelopment and several vacant commercial buildings. There is no present bicycleor pedestrian system. As part of the comprehensive plan, a creation of an area planhas been determined to be needed to assist in guiding future development.B. Transit System ImprovementsThe development of an efficient and effective transit component for the County is becoming amore prevalent policy discussion. Increasing fuel costs, projected traffic growth, and demonstratedlower levels of service for the county’s transportation system have propelled this transportationelement forward. Providing on-demand or fixed-route systems, park and ride options, and highoccupancy vehicle lanes are community transportation issues that need further planning activities.Improving the transit system in Floyd County could help lessen congestion on County roadways inthe future. Currently there are no fixed route mass transit options for residents living inGeorgetown, Greenville, and the unincorporated areas of Floyd County. TARC provides serviceonly in the City of New Albany. The development of new routes serving higher-density activitycenters along US 150 and SR 62/64 in Floyd County could greatly increase ridership on masstransit. Travelers will only use mass transit if it is able to get them to their destinations as quicklyas if they used automobiles. To increase the attractiveness of mass transit and provide fasterservice, dedicated bus lanes should also be considered.Prepared by Strand Associates, Inc. ® 3-8KRH:pll\S:\@SIECO\001--050\046\008\Wrd\Thoroughfare Plan\Draft 07-19-07\S3-Alternatives Development 07-19-07.doc\072007
