A strong consortium backs up the Youngster<br />
project with a basis in professional experience<br />
and economic power. Each partner has specialized<br />
experience in different spheres of the project<br />
such that the project can be completed with<br />
maximum effect.<br />
Deutsche Telekom represented by T-Nova, based<br />
in Berlin, has a great deal of experience in managing<br />
large multinational research and development<br />
projects. They are leading work packages<br />
aimed at project management and definition of<br />
new business models and application scenarios.<br />
Siemens AG will manage work package 2, dealing<br />
with platform development. They bring to<br />
the project expertise in mobile middleware,<br />
architectures, context-aware mobile applications<br />
and UMTS services.<br />
Sony International (Europe) is a leading manufacturer<br />
of consumer and professional electronic<br />
equipment. They contribute with their expertise<br />
in the areas of audio, video and telecommunications<br />
to the Youngster project. Both the Sony<br />
and Siemens teams are almost exclusively dedicated<br />
to the development of the mobile service<br />
platform on which applications and services will<br />
be developed.<br />
<strong>Telenor</strong>, Norway’s largest telecommunications<br />
company, brings to Youngster a strong multidisciplinary<br />
group, which includes both technical<br />
and non-technical specialists. <strong>Telenor</strong> will manage<br />
work package 3, which deals with field trials.<br />
Field trials will be administered in Norway<br />
among a selection of Norwegian youths.<br />
The French company Tecsi will contribute to the<br />
definition of application scenarios addressing the<br />
needs and expectations of the users, contribute to<br />
the identification of requirements for the Mobile<br />
Service Platform services, design and implement<br />
generic application frameworks addressing the<br />
implementation of services in the areas of mobile<br />
eBusiness and eCommerce, and will specify,<br />
design and implement one or more demonstration<br />
services.<br />
The Heriott-Watt University in Scotland has<br />
experience in different aspects of personalization<br />
and will contribute to the research and technical<br />
developments in this area – whether this is personalized<br />
presentation by the information/service<br />
provider or tools for the personalization of<br />
presentations for use by youngsters themselves.<br />
They will also contribute to the definition of the<br />
Mobile Service Framework and development<br />
of the Platform.<br />
The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation<br />
(NRK) is onboard as content provider. NRK<br />
brings its experiences in producing and providing<br />
content across different platforms. As a market<br />
leader in Norway on TV, radio and electronic<br />
media (digital TV, digital radio, Internet and<br />
telecom) NRK will contribute to the field trials<br />
by providing results from ongoing youthresearch<br />
projects in NRK. NRK will also contribute<br />
in the definition of services, business<br />
models and by providing content for the application<br />
prototypes.<br />
Youngster Objectives<br />
The main goals of the Youngster project is to<br />
develop a new open, active, mobile multimedia<br />
environment which includes the following:<br />
1 Development of an open, active Mobile Service<br />
Platform. The main characteristics of this<br />
platform will include:<br />
• Components for the personalization of services;<br />
• Customer specific information filtering and<br />
“pull” services;<br />
• Context- and location-aware features;<br />
• Seamless adaptation of services to characteristics<br />
of different end systems and networks;<br />
• Content management and content interpretation<br />
tools;<br />
• Mechanisms and components to ensure<br />
security and privacy.<br />
2 The development of a new generation of<br />
enhanced mobile services using the enhanced<br />
Mobile Service Platform. These services will<br />
include the following features:<br />
• Detection of, and smart interaction with<br />
other devices in the user’s environment;<br />
• Personalization and adaptation of services,<br />
user awareness;<br />
• Integration of location aware services.<br />
3 Verification of service and platform components<br />
in trials with a suitable test community.<br />
The trials will focus on young people and will<br />
be conducted in Norway by <strong>Telenor</strong> and NRK.<br />
The results of the trials will be evaluated and<br />
success will be assessed in terms of the<br />
response from the young people who participate<br />
in user testing.<br />
4 Definition of new business models for providing<br />
the services to various groups of users.<br />
