with programmable up- and down converters,
followed by base band processing.
Technology developments suggest the first prototypes
of SW radio equipment within 2003, following
the need for multi-standard 2G/3G terminals.
SW radio technology is of even higher
importance for base stations, as it increases the
hardware lifetime, allows hardware reuse by
reprogramming, and the inclusion of future
access methods such as UMTS TDD and Hiper-
LAN/2.
SW download and on-the-fly upgrade is a major
advantage when using SW radio terminals. This
implies standardised hardware solutions or resident
compilers. The implementation of a real
time Java virtual machine can be one of the most
promising solutions in this field.
