EUROPEAN PROGRAMMES FROM SPAIN 113(ICT), competence in language acquisition, enhance Science knowledge,with special reference to Maths— have been implemented in all memberStates.<strong>European</strong> Programmes: Spain´s ContributionIn this context, the Commission´s promotion of a great number ofprogrammes aimed at enhancing the quality of education can beexplained. Amongst the most important are Socrates, Leonardo daVinci <strong>and</strong> Youth.The <strong>European</strong> Commission for Education is responsible for theimplementation of the policies approved by the <strong>European</strong> Council inthis field. It makes official announcements <strong>and</strong> sponsors projects ondifferent subjects. In the case of decentralised projects <strong>and</strong> actions, itdistributes funds destined to educational programmes amongst thedifferent States, establishes management regulations <strong>and</strong> monitorstheir development.The Leonardo da Vinci Programme is geared towards employment<strong>and</strong> vocational training. The Youth Programme is aimed at volunteers,principally among the youth.Due to time constraints, only the Socrates Programme will be dealtwith, since it covers all of the stages in a person’s life.Socrates ProgrammeIt is a <strong>European</strong> Community Action Programme in the field ofeducation which was approved by the Parliament <strong>and</strong> the Council on24 January, 2000. It will be implemented from 1 January, 2000 to 31December, 2006.Aims—To strengthen the <strong>European</strong> dimension of education at all levels.—To improve the knowledge of <strong>European</strong> languages.—To promote cooperation <strong>and</strong> mobility throughout education.—To encourage innovation in education.—To promote equal opportunities in all sectors of education.ActionsComenius: School education (Institutions, teachers <strong>and</strong> students).Erasmus: Higher education (Departments, teachers <strong>and</strong> students).
