DIFFERENCE AS DESTABILISING FACTOR 149(Brasil), not to protest but to suggest reactionary measures <strong>and</strong> proposesolutions in order to make, at last, another world possible.The violence associated with some —indeed a minority— of thesegroups (breaking of shop windows, etc.) is criticised <strong>and</strong> their delegitimizationis aimed at, but they are not terrorists (shots in the back of theneck, savage attacks).They have great weaknesses <strong>and</strong> challenges to overcome, but theyalso have some virtues:—Their central goal is that society should recover its leading role.—They are not a leap into the void. They maintain multiple <strong>and</strong>varied relationships with left-wing parties <strong>and</strong> with sectors of theworkers´movement.—The movements have transnational networks in which both theNorth <strong>and</strong> the South are represented. The rights of the South<strong>and</strong> those of future generations are their most central claims.—They contribute a perspective of global responsibility vis-à-vispartial responsibilities.In this first bloc of the Seminar (“Europe Seen from the Perspectiveof Education”) <strong>and</strong> even more so in the third session on implications inthe educational spheres, we cannot obviate some of the educationalchallenges deriving from globalization. They are synthetically thefollowing, alongside some of their characteristics 7 :—Population changes. Education for senior citizens, <strong>and</strong> Educationfor Citizenship <strong>and</strong> Multiculturalism.—Assertion of nationalisms. To advance in multiple identities, feelingsof belonging <strong>and</strong> education for inclusion.—USA´s hegemonic situation. Interculturalism, acknowledgement<strong>and</strong> Peace <strong>and</strong> Non-violence Education.—Expansion of supranational entities. Student exchanges. Recognitionof qualifications. Citizenship. Co-operative learning. Competencein communication <strong>and</strong> interrelation. Solidarity.—No states but institutions: IMF, WB, WTO. Active <strong>and</strong> responsiblecitizenship. Conscious consumers.—Increase of inequalities. Education as a priority. Fight againstinequality <strong>and</strong> exclusion through social citizenship <strong>and</strong> non-sexisteducation.7Massot, Inés. Professor at Barcelona University.
