INDIVIDUAL, GROUP AND SOCIETYConstruction of a <strong>European</strong> Feeling of Belonging: Educationalchallenges 10Bartolomé <strong>and</strong> others (in press) 11 insist that construction of a feelingof belonging to Europe must be made from a pedagogy of inclusion<strong>and</strong> social responsibility. The key elements are:1. Knowledge as foundation.2. Acceptance as a condition.3. Value as an impulse.4. Social cohesion <strong>and</strong> people’s development as a horizon.5. Intellectual citizenship as a process.The big majority of authors point out that in order to construct apeaceful Europe, a sense of belonging must be promoted viaeducation:—That takes into consideration national <strong>and</strong> ethnic multiculturalism<strong>and</strong> does not detriment national <strong>and</strong> regional identities.—That favours the internalization <strong>and</strong> appreciation of values <strong>and</strong>attitudes of cohesion <strong>and</strong> solidarity; democracy, social justice,<strong>and</strong> human rights.—That links to education for intercultural citizenship.—With an inclusive pedagogic focus surpassing the “we-they”opposition.For Rodriguez Lajo (2002) the challenge of “Fomenting the developmentof <strong>European</strong> identity,” would imply teaching <strong>and</strong> learning to:1. Know or have an updated view of Europe. This should be donefrom a new paradigm which, without distorting history, showsits most humanistic face <strong>and</strong> its different perspectives, whichcould be about:—Knowing dynamics of the <strong>European</strong> construction. That is, toanalyse its construction from a historical viewpoint <strong>and</strong> fromdifferent orientations (geopolitical, cultural, social, etc.)10A better development of these educational challenges about identity <strong>and</strong> theireducational implications can be seen in Rodriguez Lajo (2002), Berthelemy (1999), Ryba(1999), Bartolomá <strong>and</strong> others (in press).11Taking into consideration all these elements, they have created a series ofpedagogical marerials to work in the <strong>European</strong> dimension within secondary education.From this viewpoint a program has been created to develop ethnic-cultural identity instudents of the first cycle of S<strong>and</strong>in secondary schools (1998).
