This iswhat the <strong>European</strong> Union is, or at least currently aims to be. Its raisond´être: to create a space for peace, freedom <strong>and</strong> welfare. Its missionstatement: to join efforts to obtain better results, making the most ofscale economies.Currently, there are thirteen countries that are ringing the doorbellof the <strong>European</strong> Union, ten of which are from Central <strong>and</strong> EasternEurope (Bulgaria, the Check Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia,Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Rumania) <strong>and</strong> three from theMediterranean area (Cyprus, Malta <strong>and</strong> Turkey).At present, negotiations are taking place with the first ten, <strong>and</strong>Turkey was offered the possibility of becoming a Union member in thefuture. This enlargement would mean, without counting Turkey, apopulation of over 500 million inhabitants, which implies a market <strong>and</strong>an economic power of great weight in global organization.Europe <strong>and</strong> business peopleAfter saying all of this, you might wonder: what role do businesspeople play here?In order to discuss this, we should first think about our aims <strong>and</strong>ask ourselves what type of Europe we want <strong>and</strong> how we can achievethose ideal features of ethical-humanistic values we have previouslyreferred to. In this process, businessmen have, undoubtedly, a majorrole to play as fundamental subjects in the development of theeconomy, the production <strong>and</strong> distribution of goods <strong>and</strong> services <strong>and</strong> inthe allocation of indispensable resources for the creation of a welfarestate which guarantees peace, stability, solidarity <strong>and</strong> justice.When we speak of a business, we are referring to the economicunit in charge of the production of goods <strong>and</strong> services, i.e. anorganised ensemble of production elements arranged according tocertain social <strong>and</strong> technological regulations, in order to accomplisheconomic objectives. We see the business as a legal <strong>and</strong> social unit<strong>and</strong>, as such, profoundly human, formed by a series of factors underthe management, responsibility <strong>and</strong> control of the business person,<strong>and</strong> whose goal will be determined by the economic system in which itis immersed.In our case, <strong>and</strong> in the current moment in History, we should referto the free market economic system, as recognised in article 38 of our
